Course Overview




Goals
To introduce students to the basic principles of pharmacology
·       Pharmacokinetics
·       Pharmacodynamics
To use our understanding of the basic principles to describe the drug development process
                                       
Upon completion of this course students will be able to
·       Distinguish between pharmacokinetics and Pharmacodynamics.
·       Describe the different routes of administration
·       Define absorption and identify the relationship between administration, absorption and bioavailability
·       Describe the determinants of distribution
·       Identify the primary sites of drug metabolism
·       Describe the purpose of metabolism and the processes involved
·       Describe the determinants of drug metabolism
·       Identify the relationship between drug metabolism and excretion
·       Describe the concept of steady state concentration and what impacts it.
·       Define half life and the kinetics of drug metabolism
·       Describe the impact of age on all aspects of pharmacokinetics.
·       Describe the most common mechanism of drugs action.
·       Identify the body control systems

Ion channels
Enzymes
Carrier molecules
·       Enumerate the types and molecular structure of receptors.
·       Describe the chemistry of drug receptor binding.
·       Define the dose response relationship curves and their importance.

The course will be in 3 modules each divided into 6 lectures and quizzes will be included in each lecture.

Module one: pharmacokinetics
Module two: Pharmacodynamics
Module three: drug development

In order to pass this course, you must achieve a composite mark of at least 60 %
·       Attendance and daily quizzes 12%
·       Progress exam mcq 12%
·       Group assignment and presentation 36%
·       End of session examination short and long answer questions 40%
